Founded in 1993, Kiawah Development Partners led by Charles "Buddy" P. Darby III bought Kiawah Island and proceeded with the master plans for the community. Today, 60% of the community is built to date and all the community amenities are in place. The crown jewel of Kiawah Island, The River Clubhouse burned to the ground in March 2010. The expanded rebuilt River Clubhouse is slated to reopen in 2012, before the 2012 PGA Championship.
