HAPPIEST SEASIDE TOWNS

A southern city with lots of charm, sophistication, tradition and culture is how many of the Beaufort residents describe their hometown confirming it as one of the most ideal places to live in South Carolina. Well, now, the seaside village has yet another distinction to add to its list of impressive attributes.

Beaufort’s downtown area was recently named an official South Carolina Cultural District. The city had been vying for this designation for nearly a year. Thanks to several dedicated people and lots of hard work, it was clear that Beaufort met all the qualifications. In order to be named a Cultural District, the town needed to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Attract artists, creative entrepreneurs and cultural enterprises to communities
  • Encourage economic development
  • Foster local cultural development
  • Provide a focal point for celebrating and strengthening local cultural identity
  • Attract tourists
  • Help preserve and reuse historic buildings
  • Enhance the image and visibility of a place
  • Foster a supportive environment for arts and culture

The completion of that process led to last month’s passage and signage of legislation by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley that officially declared downtown Beaufort, one of the ideal places to live in South Carolina, a Cultural District. The demand for new homes in Beaufort SC will likely see an increase thanks to this new recognition and the coastal town being a sought after destination for retirees and baby boomers looking for a warmer climate by the sea.
