The Power of the Sea

Flagler Palm Coast
Published on August 11, 2011

Engineers might think of Offshore Wind Farms where gusty winds off the ocean will soon be harnessed creating alternative power, common in Europe. Instead, walk the Florida beaches at the break of dawn in Flagler Palm Coast and notice the natural power of the sea. Quiet moments enjoyed by joggers. People sitting on the sand, deep in meditation watching the sunrise on the horizon. You'll see the broken hearted and terminally ill seeking comfort from the morning glory, hoping not to be noticed. As the day brightly unfolds attracting families to the beach, children build sand castles and splash in the waves. The sunsets bring romance, couples in love walking slowly together hand in hand. The sea tends to be the first place many of us seek for vacation, laughter, and comfort or where to retire.

Not all of us are attracted to the sea but if you are, proximity to the ocean is important if you want to enjoy beach living to improve your health and wellness. After spending this week researching the coastal North Carolina real estate, we realize ‘the coast’ can be used in a very broad term. In some areas of North Carolina, 'the coast' could actually be 50 miles west of the beach, not an easy trek for those who want to walk the shore. In Florida, people refer to the coast as less than 10 miles from the beach. Otherwise, Floridian's call it inland.

Flagler in Palm Coast is known as one of Florida's best beach towns, home to resorts and gated Florida golf communities. Retirees are drawn to Palm Coast homes in developments like Hammock Beach Resort, Cinnamon Beach at Ocean Hammock and Hammock Dunes Club. If you travel a bit little bit further south of these beach resorts, you'll find miles of unspoiled Florida beaches with older homes across the street on the west of AIA. AIA is the roadway which hugs the Florida beaches. Fortunately, hi-rise condominium buildings along the beach don’t exist in Palm Coast Florida.

If you’re like most people and can’t afford a home directly on a Florida beach, at least live as close as you can to the beach when you search for where to retire in Florida. The ocean is not far from the Intracoastal Waterway which makes affordable golf course living possible. The gated Florida Intracoastal community Grand Haven is not expensive and is close enough to access the beach in about 15 minutes, by crossing over the bridge. The gated Florida Intracoastal waterway community Palm Coast Plantation does not have a golf course and is another affordable option on the west side of the bridge.

For those unfamiliar with Palm Coast homes, the region is located on the east coast of Florida between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. Thankfully protected and preserved, marine wildlife is still plentiful to enjoy in Palm Coast Florida. During the summer months, it’s common to find baby turtles rushing to the sea in the early morning hours. Almost year round, manatees hang out in the Intracoastal Waterway, easy to observe while quietly kayaking. Manatees are afraid of the noise from speed boats, so they hide when they can. Herons and egrets sing beautiful melodies hidden in the shadows of the marsh. Seagulls belly laugh along the shore. Dolphins frolic searching for fish right before your eyes in the waterways feed by the ocean. Can you feel the power of the sea?
