What makes for a great place to live? Is it location? The real estate market? The culture? The neighbors? Or perhaps it’s a combination of all of the above, and more besides.

There’s no strict definition for what makes a city great. Even New York City, sometimes called the greatest city in the world, has its detractors. What some might call bustling, lively, and vivacious, others see as overcrowded, excessively noisy, and eccentric to the point of weirdness.

Best Mountain Towns in North Carolina

Some cities offer something for everyone to love, and that’s what we’ll explore today. Here are a few of North Carolina’s favorite mountain towns, located along the length of the historic Blue Ridge Mountains.

Hendersonville

The locals call it the “Friendliest City in America,” and with good reason! “Quaint yet trendy” describes Hendersonville to a tee. This little village is sequestered in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but there’s no shortage of fun to be had here. North Carolina’s best-kept secret offers an enticing blend of historical tradition and sophisticated mod-cons.

Downtown Hendersonville is a hub of art galleries, award-winning restaurants, and beautifully preserved architecture. Admire the town’s beloved painted bears while you take in busking musicians or stroll the historic streets.

Hendersonville, like other cities along the eastern thermal belt, boasts pleasantly moderate climes year-round. This makes it ideal for outdoor activities of all kinds, from enjoying a drink on a patio to exploring Hendersonville’s public art trail.

Waynesville

Can’t get enough of that North Carolina mountain scenery? Us, neither. That’s why we love Waynesville

Waynesville is famous for its abundance of down-home southern-style eateries, with delectable offerings like country steak, southern BBQ, and shrimp and grits. Be sure also to check out Waynesville’s locally-sprung breweries, like the popular Boojum Brewing Company Taproom, which gets its water right out of the mountain’s sparkling freshwater streams.

And when you’re not getting your fill at the local eateries, why not take in some of the excellent arts and culture the town offers? With its proximity to the North Carolina hub of Asheville, Waynesville offers many of the same big-city features, without the hustle and bustle of its neighbor.

Highlands

‘Highlands’ isn’t just a name! Located over 4,000 miles above sea level, Highlands, is a crisp breath of fresh air. Like the other mountain towns on this list, Highlands offers some phenomenal natural views, like its three gravity-defying mountain lakes and 250-plus waterfalls. These lakes are the perfect spot for paddling, and a handful is a home to some really excellent fly-fishing, as well. But the good times don’t stop there.

Highlands is known for its gorgeous, sprawling golf courses, including the High Hampton Inn and Country Club golf course, a top-tier golf community designed by none other than George Cobb. Burlingame, Trillium, and Sapphire National Golf Club also host members of the public by invitation.

In the mood for a little shopping? There’s nothing better than buying local, and you’ll find some absolute gems browsing through Highlands’ antique shops.

Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock, is aptly named for an unusual rock formation that juts out over the awe-inspiring Johns River Gorge. From this vantage point, you can glimpse the soaring mountain peaks, and lush forests, and if the wind is blowing in the right direction, you may even see some light debris go shooting upwards - thus the name!

But it’s not just known for its stunning views of nature and outdoor attractions: Blowing Rock is also famous for its “award-winningly quaint” downtown. Entering its town square is like stepping into a cozy Hallmark movie. This enchanting hamlet, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the jewel in the mountain range’s crown.

This century-old village boasts some truly metropolitan shopping and dining experiences. You’ll also find some exceptional boutiques, resorts, and spas. What’s not to love?
