As we approach our golden years, the thrill of ditching our 9 to 5 job once and for all may become a dominant thought. With more time on our hands, now we can go back to school, learn a new hobby, entertain our friends, dance the night away and play golf. For many of us, this also may mean a transitional move away from the snow-laden high tax states in the Northeast. Retirement also mean living a fixed income.
Florida has attracted retirees for decades for many reasons. The tropical climate means year round golf and endless sunshine. Florida is also synonymous with no state income tax plus home prices in the middle of the state are much less than the national average. In fact, it’s not hard to find a beautiful new home under $200,000.
When we think of the best retirement communities in FL, The Villages is it. There’s really no place like it. Everything that’s been built over the past 30 years is designed (and priced) with retirees in mind. What started out as a golf community of 2,000 homes has unfolded into a retirement community with almost 50,000 homes. Approximately 20 people move to The Villages every day!
What’s the big attraction? In a nut shell, it’s like Disney for seniors. Tons of attractions, places to eat, live entertainment and things to do. There are over 60 recreational centers with all types of swimming pools, fitness centers and game rooms. The Villages has more golf holes than any master planned community in the world; 540 holes of golf. Residents can choose to play at one of the 11 championship golf courses or 36 nine hole executive golf courses. The best part, complimentary golf for life is included with ownership at The Villages. They only charge a small fee if you want to drive your own golf cart on the course.
When it comes to getting around, golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation. It’s estimated there are over 50,000 golf carts zooming along the 100 miles plus of street legal roads and pathways and these are not your average golf carts. Most are tricked-out and personalized to reflect the owner’s interests. Whether it’s a sports team, muscle car or the family’s heritage, the variety is impressive at one of the finest Florida golf retirement communities.
Making friends is incredibly easy at The Villages. With over 2,000 social clubs, there’s endless opportunities to spend time with neighbors centered around common interests. Sports is also a big deal. Folks might be surprised to learn there are over men’s softball teams, a dozen or so ladies teams, and almost 70 co-ed teams competing in leagues throughout the season. The Villages has over 100 tennis courts, 100 pickleball courts and two major state-of-the-art fitness centers. It also has its own equestrian polo field.
The Lifelong Learning College at The Villages has approximately 20,000 seniors enrolled offering every type of class imaginable. Three super-sized urban town squares and ten commercial areas is where residents come to eat, shop and catch up on the day’s adventure. There are over 100 restaurants to choose from! Residents also enjoy world-class entertainment 365 days at one of three entertainment venues. The most elaborate theatre seats 1000 attendees.
Another top priority for aging retirees is reliable medical care close to home. The Villages Regional Hospital and the VA Outpatient Clinic provide offers 24 hour emergency care, surgical services, orthopedics, cardio and stroke care and diagnostic imaging within the community.
Did The Villages miss building anything? Unlikely. By far one of the best retirement communities in FL, if folks are looking to retire in Florida, start your search here. Home prices average in the mid $200’s but retirees can find homes under $200k or premier homes in the $500’s. The cost for all these amenities; $145 a month plus the applicable CDD fee. Each neighborhood has a designated Community Development District (CDD). The CDD maintains the roads, water supply, utilities and supporting infrastructure. Fees range from $97 to $448 depending on the district.
