Echota - Best Mountain Community of the Year
“The mountains are calling and I must go” said John Muir, a Scottish-American naturalist who lived more than a decade ago. Many people don’t realize just how beautiful and majestic the Blue Ridge Mountains are in Western North Carolina, and how living in them can satisfy one’s soul in North Carolina mountain communities like Echota built in Boone.
Boone is one of North Carolina’s best college towns and home to Appalachian State University. Families have been vacationing in the area for generations both in the winter and summer months. Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Appalachian Ski Mountain are North Carolina’s best ski resorts. Skiers who own mountain vacation homes in the area enjoy over 100 days of winter sports from November through March. In the summer months, sports switch to mountain biking, hiking and zip lining. North Carolina’s most visited attraction is located in Boone. Grandfather Mountain reaches an elevation of 5,946 feet and has a fabulous mile-high swinging bridge to walk over.
The Boone North Carolina real estate development of Echota couldn’t be more perfectly located, built in the heart of it all. Development of Echota began back in 2001 by Mark Harrill of the Foscoe Companies, a 40 year resident and respected leader in the local community. The family operated business is still the twinkle of his eye.
The topography of Echota is quite dramatic, rising quickly from 3,300 feet to almost 4,200 feet. Granite boulders and mountain creeks add to the community’s curb appeal. Homes are built from the base of the development up to the summit. Chalaka is Echota’s newest neighborhood with one, two and three-bedroom residences that have insanely gorgeous views of Grandfather Mountain, with prices of their mountain vacation homes beginning in the $200k’s. HOA fees average around $300 a month depending on the size of unit one owns. Folks can find something in almost every price point at Echota, and the gated community welcomes vacation rentals through the community’s management program. Almost 700 homes have been built to date that include condominiums, townhomes, and single family homes. We like the comprehensive wellness amenities and the fact that they are owned debt free:
- Gated Entrance
- 3,300 Square Foot Clubhouse at the base of the mountain
- 6,000 Square Foot Clubhouse at the top of the mountain
- Two Fitness Centers
- Indoor Heated Swimming Pool & Hot Tub
- Outdoor Heated Swimming Pool & Hot Tub
- Bocce Ball Court, Croquet Court and Putting Green
- 25 Acre River Park and Foot Bridge on the Watauga River
- One Mile Dedicated Hiking Trail
The Watauga River is popular for whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing and fly fishing. Rainbow trout, brown trout, and striped bass are all caught in the Watauga River. As one would expect of the best North Carolina mountain communities, Echota has indoor and outdoor swimming pools and hot tubs. After a day on the ski slopes, relaxing in a hot tub overlooking Grandfather Mountain is a sweet, sweet finish.
Popular summer events include the Backyard Music Series from June to October and the Annual 4th of July party and parade. The Backyard Music Series features local musicians, local breweries and takes place at the scenic summit clubhouse.
We also like the Boone North Carolina real estate development because of its close proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s only a 15 minute drive to the parkways’ entrance. The Parkway Craft Center, Julian Price Memorial Park, Linn Cove Viaduct, Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain are all a hop-skip-and-jump off the parkway. Locals don’t refer to the area as the “Rocky Mountains of the East” for nothing. The natural scenic beauty will leave you speechless, as it does us. One property owner described it as “amazing views, lock and leave property, feels isolated yet close to town and close to Blue Ridge Parkway”.
For the avid outdoor enthusiast who appreciates living at higher elevations, Echota is one of the best North Carolina mountain communities. We honor Echota with our 2016 Bliss Award for Best Mountain Community of the Year.
