Honor and Tribute to Veterans at Camp Toccoa 8:30am

In 1942, the U.S government acquired the site of Camp Toccoa in Georgia where paratroopers were trained. More than 18,000 soldiers have learned their skill set at Camp Toccoa. The Currahee Military Museum tells the story of trainees who spent time in Toccoa, to become some of the most physically fit soldiers in the Army. It is housed in the Toccoa Train Station, along with the Toccoa Stephens County Welcome Center.

The old train station is still in operation. Amtrak stops in town on its way north and south on the southern route. The historic Southern Crescent, now known officially as the Amtrak Crescent, runs twice-a-day between New York City and New Orleans with stops that include Toccoa, Gainesville and Atlanta ... an amenity that adds to the uniqueness of the beautiful mountain town. You might be surprised to see all the fun things to do in Toccoa GA.

Stop any resident on the streets of downtown and they’ll be quick to share why they love living in Toccoa. The friendly people, the old town nostalgia and being surrounded by an outdoor recreational mecca quickly come to mind. In Toccoa, you’ll find spectacular waterfalls like  Toccoa Falls and 2,689 acre Tallulah Gorge State Park. The Tallulah Gorge has a 1,000 foot drop and is where six waterfalls finish.  Lake Hartwell is another Toccoa favorite. A 56,000 acre lake that cascades into both Northern Georgia and Western South Carolina.

Another significant attribute of Toccoa is the Currahee Club, one of the top golf courses in Georgia and it overlooks Lake Hartwell. Here folks can live with the modern amenities yet be able enjoy the nostalgia and throwback feelings of a small town. Here club members can spend the day at home, playing on one of the finest golf courses in America and finish off the day at the community’s 48,000 square foot mountaintop clubhouse overlooking Lake Hartwell. And spend the next day treasure hunting in the antique shops in downtown or grab a seared burger at Bell’s Drive-In Restaurant.

Currahee Club has a close sense of community too. It’s a community where residents take guided tours of nearby towns together, where they enjoy outdoor concerts and a farmer’s market at the sports campus, and themed dinners and cooking classes in the clubhouse.
