Published on September 16, 2016

The 28th Annual Six Gap Century & Three Gap Fifty is more than a cycling competition it’s an adventure for bike enthusiasts.  The two-day event, which takes place the last weekend of September, is a favorite activity of residents from North Georgia retirement communities. Thousands of adult and youth cyclists will converge to compete in some of the toughest and steepest bike climbs in the Southeast.

First out the gate, the Six Gap Century on Saturday on September 24th. Cyclists will gather on the historic square of Dahlonega. The cyclists will tackle the 104-mile course as they pedal over arduous elevations ranging from 1400 ft to 3460 ft. Then on Sunday, September 25th the competition continues with the Three Gap Fifty. While this 58-mile course isn’t as challenging as the Six Gap Century, it still requires lots of stamina and determination to conquer the steep mountain climbs.

Whether cyclists are participating in the race as part of a bike club, or taking part as an individual cyclist, this competition brings out the best of the best, be it young or old. It also gives riders a chance to view the magnificent North Georgia Mountains during one of the best times of the year. Cyclists can enjoy September’s mild breeze as they view the various tourist sights, which include the Brasston Bald Mountain, Appalachian Trial and much more.

Outdoors enthusiasts are naturally drawn to this area. There’s hiking, fishing, swimming, walking tours and, of course, biking. Because North Georgia is so popular among cyclists it isn’t hard for local or touring cyclists to find a bike club. Tourists, especially families, are also fond of the area. The numerous waterfalls, state parks and rivers serve as a nice backdrop for family fun adventures.

The beauty of North Georgia is also what draws many to the area’s rustic mountain homes. Imagine stepping out the front door to comfortable temperatures and looking up to see snowcapped mountains. That scenario is not uncommon here. Unlike the harsh winters in the north, residents of North Georgia’s rustic mountain homes can count on warm days and cool nights during the summer and comfortable temperatures during the fall months. Add the mild temps with the beauty of the leaves changing colors as fall gets underway, and it’s clear why North Georgia retirement communities are a favorite among baby boomers.

And it’s not just the weather that makes North Georgia retirement communities so alluring.  Friendly communities with custom designed rustic mountain homes in various architectural styles also contribute to its popularity. One standout community is Soleil Laurel Canyon.

The 55+ gated estate is conveniently located a short distance from Atlanta. Residents of this active community enjoy stellar amenities including a 28,000 square foot clubhouse with a heated lap pool and library, tennis center and nearby golf course and much more. There are several cottage style homes to choose from. The 11-foot ceiling, marble vanities and designer lighting will amaze guests. Just one way Soleil Laurel Canyon sets itself apart from the others.
