BEST SMALL TOWNS IN SOUTH CAROLINA

The word 'shrimp' can have a few different meanings. It can mean small of stature, a nice peachy, coral color or the delectable crustacean from the sea that we love to eat. Shrimp, oysters and other delights from the sea go hand in hand with the Lowcountry of South Carolina and its cuisine.

The edible kind of shrimp is certainly worth celebrating, especially if you are headed to the Sea Islands South Carolina to explore the new homes in Beaufort. While in the area checking out coastal retirement communities in the best small towns in South Carolina, stop into downtown Beaufort, America's Happiest Seaside Town and eat your way through the Shrimp Festival.

The 21st Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival is not small of stature, but is a pretty peachy event if you are a shrimp lover. The fete for our favorite crustacean starts October 2 and continues through October 3. Held in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort, this event features 15 local restaurants preparing their most sensational Shrimp dishes competing for the Silver Cup award. Entrance to the event is free, but tickets must be purchased to savor the food. Other fun events at the festival include:

  • Arts and Crafts Market, October 2 and 3
  • Deaz Guys Performance, October 2, 7-10 PM
  • 5K Bridge Walk and Run, October 3, 8 AM
  • Sweet Grass Angels Performance, October 3, 11 AM
  • Parris Island Marine Band, October 3, 2 PM

Beaufort is considered the Queen of the Sea Islands South Carolina. A historic village overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway in the center of the Sea Islands on Port Royal Island, Beaufort founded in 1711, which makes it the second oldest city in South Carolina, the oldest city being neighboring Charleston. Known for its preservation of Antebellum architecture this city celebrates and preserves its history and is a founding member of Lowcountry style and cuisine. Well thought of by the National Media, Coastal Living Magazine named Beaufort one of the Top 10 Happiest Seaside Towns in 2013, Southern Living Magazine bestowed "Best Southern Small Town" honor and National Geographic Adventure Magazine named Beaufort a "Top 50 Adventure Town". We continued with the accolades by presenting our Bliss Award to Coosaw Point in Beaufort  for being "The Happiest Community of the Year" in 2013.

Located about 5 minutes from the downtown area of Beaufort, Coosaw Point is one of the top coastal communities and there is a lot to love about this place. From the outstanding river views from the upper veranda of the Clubhouse to the Crab Shack for community events; this is a place that lives and breathes the outdoor lifestyle. Ocean access can be had from the community dock and the marshes and waterways of the area offer some of the best fishing and freshest seafood in the free world. In addition to the awards above, Beaufort was named one of the Top 20 Fishing Towns by Field and Stream Magazine. The private community dock leads to the Saint Helena Sound or the Beaufort River so if a boat trip to Savannah, Charleston or even Hilton Head Island for lunch peaks your fancy, it is easily achieved. Storage and marina services are available as well. Other amenities in this well appointed friendly community include:

COOSAW POINT AMENITIES

  • 11,000 square foot Clubhouse
  • Resort-style Swimming Pool
  • Fitness Center
  • Tennis Courts
  • Parks & Dog Park
  • Lakeside Pavilion with Outdoor Fireplace

Envision yourself settling down to retire in a charming Lowcountry-style cottage on the waterfront with all the history and ambiance of Beaufort minutes away and the freshest seafood around. Start with a visit to Coosaw Point to see the beauty and artistry of the Lowcountry for yourself. The seasons are shifting and the scents of the harvests are in the air. Oysters are back in season encouraging friends and neighbors to gather for oyster roasts and celebrate the season. In the marsh, Muhly Grass is unfurling its pink clouds providing the materials for the long tradition of Sweetgrass basket making.

October is a great month to visit the Lowcountry. Fall is casting its spell throughout the Sea Islands South Carolina and soft cool breezes are settling serenity over the area. It is a great time to cast a net for new homes in Beaufort in one of the best small towns in South Carolina.
