Music comes alive with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. For more than 45 years, the WSO has showcased talented musicians from southeastern North Carolina. Simply put, with its rich melodic sounds, the WSO is a valuable contributor to Wilmington’s cultural fabric. A night at the symphony is considered by many one of the fun things to do in Wilmington, NC.

WSO performances captivate and inspire audiences of all ages. As baby boomers live longer and eat better, they are also taking more time to enjoy the finer things in life like an evening of classical music. Retirees are flocking to symphony performances to be impressed by the mesmerizing music of the strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.  This year will be no exception for the WSO and the Wilmington NC retirement communities

The 2016-2017 season marks Steven Errante’s 30th Anniversary Season as Conductor. This year’s Masterworks Series highlights classical music from four centuries, and the highlight of this season’s Symphony Pops! is a very special encore performance with Tony Award winner Linda Lavin along with famed pianist Billy Stritch and jazz violinist Aaron Weinstein. The WSO is preparing for a season of amazing events. Among them:

  • Schubert’s Great

The “Grand Partita” by Mozart whose exquisite beauty tormented Salieri in the feature film Amadeus is paired with Franz Schubert’s “Great” C-Major Symphony, music originally thought to be so difficult that it wasn’t performed until 11 years after the composer’s death.

Saturday, November 12th, 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for this performance range from $25 – $35

  • Operatic Orchestra

Chair of the String Department at UNC School of the Arts, Kevin Lawrence joins the Symphony for Antonin Dvořák’s tuneful Violin Concerto. Also on the program is a selection of preludes, interludes, and dances from the world of opera, including Richard Strauss’s exotic Dance of the Seven Veils.

Saturday, March 18, 2017, 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for this performance range from $25 – $35

  • Season Finale

Cuban composer Leo Brouwer (known for scoring the film Like Water for Chocolate) has written prolifically for the guitar, and Justin Hoke makes his WSO debut playing Brouwer’s Concierto Elegiaco. The Symphony rounds out the season with Dmitri Shostakovich’s sparkling music for the Soviet film The Gadfly.
