Lots of Elbow Room at The Coves Mountain River Club

Like many others, you may wonder: what if we moved to North Carolina and what is it that is bringing so many people to NC mountain communities? One new resident says his family loves the subtle change of seasons and definitely does “not miss long, harsh Northeastern winters.” Another likes the unparalleled friendly people (one reason is so many newcomers).  And still another cites the storybook mountainous environment that offers everyone a lifestyle of health and overall happiness.

So what more could you ask? Songwriter James Taylor celebrated the state in a legendary hit song, “Carolina On My Mind.” A newspaper story from one of the state’s small NC mountain communities compares the song to reality:  “People haven't gone to Carolina in their minds. They're actually moving here in droves.”

There’s a growing evidence of that on a daily basis. Particularly so for NC mountain and equestrian communities (where horses may at times rival the number of autos).

For a recent 20-year period, NC gained more than two million new residents, according to US Census numbers. A less formal testimony to the North Carolina mystique: The yearly United Van Lines Movers’ studies. They show the state is regularly among the top for moves, and the only one to have a consistent majority of many more people moving in than are moving out.

So by now you may also wonder: who are these people?  Some come looking for jobs. Others are retirees. Still others are second-home buyers (who not uncommonly decide to make this a first home location). Because of its popularity, one thing they’re likely to find: lots of acreage for sale.

But what to buy? Land in a rural area or in a fine master planned community. That brings us to The Coves Mountain River Club in the charming small town of Lenoir in the foothills.

The Coves has quite a variety of property to choose from and best of all, we just released two oversized estate parcels. One 24 acre parcel is clearly geared to equestrian needs but doesn’t have to be. Both homesites are at reasonable prices for NC mountain communities:  less than $6,000 an acre. That is not a typo!

Finding acreage for sale is not difficult to find in North Carolina, as we said, but what makes The Coves Mountain River Club different? In a nutshell, The Coves is among just a few developments offering a gated mountainous community with a vast wealth of lifestyle amenities.

The Coves is also one of the few communities offering high mountain top (long range) views that also has five miles of frontage on the Johns River (new residents often cite falling in love with those spectacular views as another reason for the move here).

The Coves’ nature-based amenities are like having your own private outdoors. Right in your backyard.

The Coves is close to three national protected forests:

---The Pisgah National Forest,  a stunning land of 500,000 acres of mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, and heavily forested slopes.  It’s one of the first designated “wilderness” areas in the US. But that only encourages its many uses and outdoor activities. The hardwood forest is studded with whitewater rivers ideal for recreational uses, and hundreds of miles of walkable trails..

---The Nantahala Forest is equally large with more than 500,000 acres with elevations up to 5,800 feet. ”Nantahala” is a Cherokee word meaning “land of the noon day sun.” Fitting because in the Nantahala Gorge, the sun only reaches to the valley floor near midday.

---The Chattahoochee National Forest adjoining Nantahala dwarfs its neighbors with more than 750,000 acres of mountainous forest land in North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. It is one of the largest expanses of public lands in the eastern United States.

Running through much of this area is the Blue Ridge Parkway, America’s Favorite Scenic Drive. Which also raises another question:

When does a road become an attraction in itself? Answer: when it’s the highly acclaimed and thoroughly scenic. The parkway is a priceless free amenity in Western North Carolina. It travels 252 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, offering a varied menu of stops for camping and other outdoor activities, and indoor attractions such as cultural and historical sites. The best thing you can say about it is this: you will stop more than you drive.

In small NC mountain communities, residents know they enjoy a lot of privacy. But they also wonder: are they too isolated from social activities and people. Not the case here at The Coves. There’s always something going on. From cook-off competitions to guest lecture series, residents calendars are busy.

The Coves is also centrally located. Both Charlotte and Asheville, to cite just two examples, are within an hour or two of driving distances. Charlotte offers everything you would expect in the state’s largest city. Asheville is much smaller, of course, but is an even more storied place to visit for its own particular charms.

As many new residents of North Carolina point out, the year-round climate and temperature here is an attraction in itself. And so is the fall foliage now unfolding everywhere in the state (and particularly dramatic in NC mountain communities).

And as those who live here already know and can tell others, there is a plenty of elbow room. And a lot more leg room, too.

We suggest you take a look and explore all types of homesites at The Coves, both big and small.
