Life on the Johns River at The Coves Mountain River Club

Published on August 29, 2016

Do you long for peaceful living, long range mountain views, and quality time spent with good friends by a mountain-fed river? You can have the best of these worlds in the mountains of North Carolina at The Coves, one of the popular NC mountain communities in the foothills. But how can The Coves boast both riverfront living and long range mountain views? The answer lies in the carefully chosen topography a decade ago. Western North Carolina real estate developer Tim Ritch knew he’d struck ‘gold’ when he found the 3,600 acres. In fact, people panned for gold along the Johns River decades before.

Of all the NC mountain communities, it’s hard to find anything like The Coves. With over 5 miles of frontage on the Johns River connecting to Wilson Creek, residents enjoy splashing in the river, panning for gold, and North Carolina fly fishing. High above the river, at the community's summit, are the warmth, comfort, and amenities of the mountaintop Pisgah Mountain Lodge. Here residents sip hot chocolate while taking in beautiful mountaintop views. On warm summer days, you’ll find residents swimming in the community’s infinity-view saline swimming pool. At an elevation of 1,700 feet, the lodge has panoramic views for miles in every direction which include Table Rock Mountain, Grandfather Mountain and the South Mountain range.

Although North Carolina fly fishing at The Coves is a favorite pastime, Evelyn’s Vineyard and Isabel’s Garden share the banks of the Johns River, where residents come to harvest crops and picnic in the sun. This is a wonderful place to listen to waterfalls, explore miles of hiking trails, or saddle-up at the community's own full-service equestrian center. Established in 2006, you may still find a handful of Western North Carolina real estate properties near the river at The Coves.

Living on the Johns River really sets The Coves Mountain River Club apart from other NC mountain communities. Whether you enjoy kayaking, canoeing, inflatable tubes, or North Carolina fly fishing, the river is known to locals as the gift that keeps on giving. Not far from The Coves, there is a 6 mile stretch that offers class I & class II whitewater rafting. Fisherman here catch rainbow trout, brown trout, small mouth bass, and plenty of nice-sized catfish.

In the summer, residents spend lazy days at one of the four community parks. At Coves River Park, residents have access to a riverside hiking trail, horseshoe pits, an outdoor kitchen and fire pit beside the water. Penelope Sliding Rock Falls, Round Mountain Ranch and the two community gardens are also adjacent to the park. Coleton’s Swimming Hole is where you’ll find an old-fashioned rope swing, and residents swimming from a sandy beach with easy access to the river.

One of the best things people love about living here, is that fact you will rarely have to shovel any snow. While The Coves is set sublimely in a charming mountain landscape, the foothills rarely sees a heavy snowfall. You can live in the mountains, swim in the summer, hike all year around, and never have worry about battling blizzards in the winter.
