NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES

Cultural enthusiasts worldwide are looking forward to the upcoming International Folkmoot Festival held annually in Waynesville, one of the best places to live in North Carolina. The 10 day dance celebration takes place July 17 through July 26, 2015.  This year, the colorful collection of dance venues will take place at Stompin’ Ground in Maggie Valley with several performances scattered throughout the city of Waynesville and neighboring communities.  This year’s celebration of dance cultures features performers from Eastern Band Cherokee performers as well as dancers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Chile, Ecuador, Estonia, Phillipines, French Canada and Puerto Rico.

The vibrant display of pageantry will commence with a Folkmoot Grand Opening on Friday, July 17 with a performance at Stompin’ Ground, Maggie Valley.  Reserved seating is available for $30. General Admission for adults is $20 and children (12 and under) are half-price.  There is also “The Folkmoot Gala & Performance” slated at the Champagne & Dessert Reception on Thursday, July 16th from 6:30 to 7:30, for “Friends of Folkmoot” for donors $150 and above and a Gala Preview Performance from 7:30 to 9:30pm.  The Folkmoot festival will end with the traditional candlelight closing on July 26th.

In 1973, through the efforts of Dr. Clinton Border, a Waynesville surgeon, accompanied a local square dance team to a folk festival in Sidmouth, England. There began the dream that would, 11 years later, become Folkmoot USA, one of the fun things to do in Waynesnville NC.  In 1983, Border presented his vision to Haywood County’s community leaders and a month after his presentation to community leaders, Folkmoot USA became a dream come true.  Borders had traveled to other festivals in Poland and France and after returning with his vision, community leaders agreed to the now world renowned “North Carolina International Folk Festival, Folkmoot USA”.

The first festival was held in 1984, a date coinciding with North Carolina’s 400th birthday celebration. The name Folkmoot, an Old English word meaning “meeting of the people,” was borrowed from a folk festival that was once held in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Who would have thought you'd find an international event so intriguing in the mountains of North Carolina.
