Modern Asheville homes
Published on May 8, 2017

Over the past decade, Asheville has become a top spot for retirement and vacations in North Carolina. Named Asheville was named Lonely Planet's #1 "Best in the U.S. Destination for 2017." (January 2017) and Tasting Table picked Asheville for its round-up of "The 7 Under-the-Radar Cities You Must Visit This Year." (January 2017)

Often times, it only takes one visit to convert a city dweller into a mountain loving Ashevillian. Retirees love the relaxed atmosphere, the sweeping mountain views, and the arts and culture scene, which can be enjoyed year-around in the mild four season weather. They appreciate the locally grown produce, and excellent restaurants and micro-breweries in and around the city. And they love the selection of affordable new homes in Asheville NC that pop up every day.

If you too are looking to retire in the Asheville area, there’s a superb event coming up you won’t want to miss. The Asheville Modern Architectural Tour in June will highlight some of the most innovative contemporary home projects in Asheville. On Saturday June 3rd, the Asheville home tour will take you through some of the best Asheville neighborhoods, where you will see superior examples of architecture, building materials, landscaping, and interior design. The tour is co-sponsored by Modern Asheville Real Estate and Atlanta Design Festival.  If you don't know whether to build your own home or buy an existing one, this is a great way to explore the possibilities.

Asheville is a high elevation mountain city booming with modern architecture. A place where innovators in architecture are enhancing the majestic beauty on the outside by utilizing clean lines and modern simplicity. Renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright was the first to introduce modern architecture back in the 20th century. His homes simplified construction techniques that allowed more mechanization and efficiency in building. Today, we see home builders fitting their homes with big, beaming windows, to capture the fabulous views in and around the Blue Ridge Mountains.

They will show you how many of the new homes in Asheville NC  balance cool, clean lines combined with the warmth of Mother Earth. On the tour you will see carefully-planned view angles, naturally lighted spaces, and natural materials that create clean, mindfully designed Asheville neighborhoods, that step back to allow the environment to take center stage. You’ll discover new homes in Asheville NC on the tour are not just for today - but they are planned Asheville neighborhoods that will carry into the future with innovative building concepts and the use of natural resources.

On June 3rd, the tour will run from 10 am to 4 pm, and take you through modern homes like Walnut Cove, Shelburne Woods, Windswept and Mayflower. Tickets are $20 per person, and you can take the tour along with architects, builders and realtors in Asheville NC to find out what makes a modern lifestyle in Asheville so appealing.

HOMES ON THE TOUR:

The Privé at Ciĕl, an NC Green Built Certified modern home built in an homage to Frank Lloyd Wright’s, Falling Water

A home that incorporates many natural materials such as Cypress wood on the exterior facade, steel beam construction, French oak flooring, and raw tiles that show imperfections. One of the most prominent features of the structure is it’s massive glass paneled walls inviting the incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in and creating an environment that includes the natural surrounding.

The Walnut Cove

Walnut Cove's inspiration was found from traditional prairie motifs and updated them for this modern home in the mountains. Throughout the residence, there is a strong theme of horizontal lines integrated with a natural, woodsy palette and a gallery-like aesthetic. The Walnut Cove Residence combines the clean lines and simplicity of modern design with warmth and functionality.

Windswept

Faced with a complex site, Windswept's main approach was decidedly simple: encourage a modern minimal lifestyle. The owners desire a home that balances room functionality with living space to create a retreat-like feel. An emphasis on indoor/outdoor living and respecting the steep, largely wooded site contribute to the overall design decisions.

The Mayflower

Situated on a mountainside with views overlooking downtown Asheville, the Mayflower residence, originally constructed in the 1970’s was a complete renovation from its original configuration. The solid foundation and asymmetrical roofline were kept intact while the interior spaces were revised to fit the client’s lifestyle. With entry on the lower level through a square pivot door, you are directed to an elegant staircase leading to the main living areas. Cantilevered steel beams support the viewing deck’s roof and allow for a view unobstructed by support columns.

Shelburne Woods

In Shelburne Woods architecture, “earth friendly” doesn’t have to be “earthy.” Mindful modern design lives as lightly as any concerned steward of our planet plus a whole lot shinier. Clean design rooted in Scandinavian principles of living avoids the gravity of excess. Shelburne is both incredibly cool and quietly step back creating an intimate stage for carefree living.

While you're in town, why not visit some great restaurants and local scenic spots. One of the best things to do in Asheville is to visit Biltmore Estate, where you can tour the 8,000 acre grounds and incredible Dupont Mansion. The grounds have gardens, vineyards, shopping and dining, and cottages to stay in.  Another great thing to do in Asheville is to hike the beautiful and serene Asheville Botanical Gardens Trails. Here there is an easy 5-mile loop trail, where you'll find 600 species of plants native to the Southern Appalachians. And after your hike, you can go for a cold craft beer at Burial Beer Company, with delicious craft beers like their Skillet Donut Stout. And when you're hungry, there are plenty of excellent restaurants in the area to choose from.

Don’t miss the Asheville Modern Architectural Tour in June. You can expect lovely summer weather, delightful fresh mountain air and lots of ideas to take home and think about as you plan your move to Asheville.
