Asheville Fall Foliage Expected to Be the Best in Years

The sun is setting earlier and there’s a crispness in the air. Residents of Asheville and the North Carolina mountain communities look forward to these events as they know these are precursors to the start of the fall season. One of the favorite times to enjoy Asheville is in the fall.  It’s the perfect time to witness the changing of the leaves, better known as fall foliage season. It’s been predicted that this year’s nature show will be one of the best in years.

What makes this year so special? According to reports, Asheville’s lack of rain during the spring and summer season is the reason.  Experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the colors of the leaves will be more vibrant than average this fall due to below-average rainfall.  In short, Mother Nature is going to put on a color works array that only she could produce. The fall foliage season along the Blue Ridge Parkway makes it one of the best places to live in Asheville NC.  And, it’s all going to happen in the rich, lush rolling terrain of the Blue Ridge Mountain - home to North Carolina’s mountain communities.

October 2-9: Highest elevations north of Asheville above 5,000 feet show the most color:

  • Mount Mitchell - Mile Post 355
  • Craggy Gardens - Mile Post 364

October 8-16: Color will increase in elevations greater than 4,000 feet:

  • Mount Pisgah - Mile Post 408

October 14-23: Many of the surrounding mountains around Asheville show plenty of color, especially in the 3,000-4,000 foot elevation range:

  • Looking Glass Rock - Mile Post 417

October 20-29: The city of Asheville (2,000 feet elevation) and nearby state parks shows the brightest colors:

  • Biltmore Estate in Asheville
  • Chimney Rock at Lake Lure
  • Lake James in Marion
