Mountain Air - Best Mountain Community of the Year

Mountain Air Country Club Airstrip

Developer Randy Banks had an incredible vision back in the early 80’s of building a traditional country club on the top of a mountain at about 5,000 feet in elevation. The monumental task is complete and has resulted in one of the most beautiful North Carolina gated communities in the Asheville area. From its mountaintop village, you can see 100 mile views in every direction and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s one of the few places we’ve been where a number of the mountains within view are actually below you. Often times, the cotton-colored clouds fill the valley below during the blush-colored sunrise. The colors and views here change by the hour and the whispers of the wind are soothing. Temperatures here in the heat of the summer max out in the mid 70’s. Ski resorts are nearby for those who enjoy winter sports.

From the moment you pass through Mountain Air Country Club's welcoming entrance, you can sense the level of care and management. The winding roads leading up to the top of the mountain are in excellent condition and provide peek-a-boo views of the lush golf course designed by Scott Pool and rustic mountain homes during the drive. Amenities include an award winning clubhouse, two delicious restaurants, mountaintop swimming pool, fitness center, tennis courts, challenging golf course and a 2,875 foot private airstrip. To watch a plane take off from the clubhouse will steal your breath away as the plane passes over the cliff’s edge. It’s no surprise that 20% of the property owners at Mountain Air are pilots.

The amenity village at the top of the community could jump off the pages of Colorado architectural magazine. Rustic embellishments wrapped around pure luxury. Back in 2009, developer Randy Banks turned over $40 million in amenities to the club members debt free. That’s a gift of $80,000+ per household or more! To us, that’s a helluva way to pay it forward at one of the finest fly in communities in Western North Carolina.

On the long list of awards Mountain Air has received over 20 years, recent awards include:

  • Top 100 Golf Courses for 2014 by the NC Golf Panel
  • 2013 Best Gated Community by Blue Ridge Magazine
  • 2013 North Carolina Most Scenic Golf Course by Triad Golf Today
  • 2009 Best Mountain Awards for Best Clubhouse, Best Amenities and Best Community Event by Pinnacle Living Mountain Homes
  • Top 10 Developments for Boomers, CBS MarketWatch, NAHB

Approximately 500 families own homes at Mountain Air near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Home choices include luxury estates, single family homes and rustic mountain homes, golf villas, low maintenance condominiums and townhomes. There are 24 distinct neighborhoods to choose from. Prices range from the $100K’s to over $1 million. A handful of lots are still available to build a dream home. The community is golf cart friendly making it easy to get around. Golf, tennis and social club memberships are available. Club dues range from $582 to $930 a month. To us, the fees are on par with similar North Carolina gated communities. Mountain Air hosts over 400 activities and events every year such as the 4th of July fireworks celebration, golf tournaments, relaxing yoga classes, or lectures under the stars with the community's naturalist. Mountain Air is one of the famous fly in communities and reflects the true essence of mountain living.

We’ve spent time here on more than one occasion and have experienced the high quality amenities. Property owners share with us comments like “the staff is wonderful, amenities are beautiful and views outstanding”. Another property owner states “the stress fades away the moment we arrive.”

Living among the clouds at Mountain Air is probably as close as you’ll get to heaven on earth near the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s one of the finest North Carolina gated communities and just 30 minutes from one of the best college towns in America, Asheville.
