Lake Talk - Georgia Mountain Lakes
Lake Burton and Lake Hartwell are both located in Northern Georgia and offer stunning views, abundant fishing and boating opportunities, and lots of water sports that thrill and excite. Lake Hartwell is the larger of the two with 56,000 acres of water spreading through six counties in two different states. Covering 962 miles of shoreline, the largest boating lake in Georgia, it is the perfect place for residents of Currahee Club on Lake Hartwell to throw a kayak or canoe in the water and take off for parts known and unknown. At a depth of 185 feet, fishing is a must. The lake supports a plethora of fish such as striped bass, walleye, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass waiting to take your bait. On any given day, sailboats, power boats, pontoons, kayaks, and canoes can be seen exploring the wonders of Lake Hartwell.
Not to be outdone, Lake Burton is a more intimate 2775 acres with 62 miles of shoreline offers its own style of fun. Its peaceful location with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, the shoreline is replete with coves begging to be explored with canoes, kayaks, or even anchoring a powerboat. With an impressive depth for its size, 130 feet, fishing is a sport of choice especially for the residents of the Waterfall Club which is nestled on its shoreline. Other popular sports at Lake Burton are water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding.
Both lakes provide a great deal of opportunities for communing with nature, enjoying friends and watersports, and experiencing wildlife.
Currahee Club on Lake Hartwell, a gated North Georgia mountain community, is attracting lots of attention this fall showing off their 2013 Southern Living Custom Builder Showcase Home. Over 6,000 visitors have toured the home since September. The showcase home, called Quarry Ridge, boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms and almost 4,000 square feet of “the latest in design trends and building technology.” Quarry Ridge overlooks the unique 17th hole, known as the Quarry Hole, of the Currahee Club golf course
Tours of the property are given on Fridays through Sundays through December 22. Tickets for the 2013 Southern Living Custom Builder Showcase Home tour cost $10.00 each with a portion of that fee going to two different local charities; Neighbors 4 Neighbors of Stephens County and the Food 2 Kids Program of Northeast Georgia. In November, a random drawing of ticket holders for the yielded 24 names of people who were chosen to participate in a Hole-In-One Contest on the Quarry Hole. The winner took home a 2013 Land Rover LR4, and all the contestants were invited to play the course with golf analyst from ESPN Billy Kratzert who is also a PGA Pro. It was a big deal and great fun.
Golf is huge at Currahee Club. Their distinctive course offers 360° sweeping views of Lake Hartwell, a fabulous boating lake in Georgia, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and three different states. The course was designed by Jim Fazio, the acclaimed golf course architect, who took full advantage of the views and the undulating land features in creating the rolling Bermuda fairways, and fast greens. Some holes feature dramatic elevation changes, up to 150 feet and one hole is a par three over a rock quarry that is nothing short of astounding. With these unique features, the course is known to be playable for all skill levels. Noted as one of Rolex’s Top 1,000 Golf Courses in the World, it was also noted in GOLFWEEK magazine that the course “advanced an unprecedented 20 spots in one year” for their top 100 rankings. By those in the know, the course has been deemed “a championship masterpiece.”

The views of Lake Hartwell are not the only thing the lake offers residents of this gated North Georgia mountain community. It is not simply a beautiful lake, it reportedly has cleaner water than many municipal water systems because of the fresh waters flowing in from the Blue Ridge Mountains. From above, it is actually possible to see distinctly the small pebbles that rest as far down as 12 feet. Because of their location on the shore of the 56,000 acre Lake Hartwell, Currahee Club members have great access to a great number of water activities including canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, tubing, and fishing. As one of the best boating lakes in Georgia, it is an aquatic wonderland.
Lake Burton, on the other hand, was created for the purpose of power generation and is one of the largest of the power company’s North Georgia lakes. As such, it has also become a large boating lake in Georgia where the residents of the nearby Waterfall Club have “day dock” privileges at the community’s boat dock. Also along the lakeshore are boat rentals, houseboats, ski boats, and pontoon boats can be found along with full service marinas, slip rentals, and boat ramps. With an abundance of coves along the lake and breathtaking views from every angle, there are a lot of exploration opportunities that beckon residents and visitors. For longer explorations, there are lakeside campgrounds for everything from tents to RV’s. Lake Burton combines practicality with beauty.
The Waterfall Club at Lake Burton is a little over an hour away from the Currahee Club. It is also a gated North Georgia mountain community with a notable golf experience. Their course is comprised of Bentgrass from tee-to-green, “one of only two golf courses in Georgia with that much desired playing surface throughout.” The course was designed by Scott Pool, a recognized architect of mountain golf courses, who took full advantage of the views of Lake Burton while creating the course for all levels of play. In combination with the levels of play, the optimal conditioning marks this as a championship course.
