BEST FLORIDA RETIREMENT CITIES

If you thought the infamous builder of the Florida East Coast Railway, Henry Flagler was responsible for all of the overpopulated, overdeveloped areas in Florida, here is a different place named in his honor. We believe one of the best Florida retirement cities, Flagler Beach is located a bit north of Daytona Beach in the Palm Coast area and is a breath of fresh air away from the crowded beach towns of the Sunshine State. Flagler Beach and the Palm Coast area harken back to the days when the East coast of Florida was a continuous ribbon dotted with charming villages on the water. Six miles of sandy Atlantic oceanfront comprise Flagler Beach, its nickname is "Florida Peaceful Beach", the Intracoastal Waterway is on the opposite side of this barrier island.

The Palm Coast and Flagler Beach are on the rise in popularity as a destination for retiring Boomers. New homes in Palm Coast FL are going up and for good reason. Bloomberg Magazine ranked Flagler Beach in the top 50 as one of America's Best Affordable Places to Retire. Perhaps a more fitting accolade is the naming of Flagler Beach as one of Florida's Top Four "Beach Hideaways" by Where to Retire Magazine. The current population of Flagler Beach is 4,500 or so and going up. But, what's not to like - 20 minutes north of Daytona's airport and a world away from traffic and congestion, there are still great restaurants and some unique dining experiences in the area.

Waterfront dining is a favored sport on barrier islands and Flagler Beach is no exception to this rule. Restaurants near Palm Coast run the gamut from shack to the mansion and cheap to pricey. There are at least 100 restaurants in the Palm Coast area and any cuisine is available, choices run from sushi to seafood, Mexican to Thai and a great selection of Meditteranean inspired eateries serving New York to Italian style pizza.
