The Currahee Club - A Place for Mountain Adventure, Fine Food and Love

Currahee Club Farmers Market
Published on July 2, 2014

As of July, we’ve visited 297 master-planned communities in the Southeast and there’s a very small percentage of neighborhoods who immediately give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.  Currahee Club in Toccoa Georgia is one of them and is one of the first Southern Living Inspired Communities. You’ll find everyday life here involves savory food made with herbs and vegetables from the community’s garden, adventures to nearby waterfalls, hiking trails or afternoons on the lake, and cherishing quality time with family and friends back at a Currahee Club home.

Currahee Club is a gated Georgia mountain community with attractive curb appeal which is to be expected from a Southern Living inspired community. Hanging flower baskets, carpet-like lawns, wind chimes and hammocks decorate the mountain neighborhood. Fields of sunflowers and wildflowers enhance the charm. Situated on a hill top, the layered mountain views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Lake Hartwell add to the splendid of outdoor living. Neighbors are friendly and social.

If you’re looking for the perfect family treat and place you could live forever, make your way over to see three Southern Living Inspired Homes and Currahee Club neighborhood. The first Southern Living Inspired Home at Currahee Club overlooks the 18th fairway and was built by Kokopelli Brothers. Two new cottage-style homes in the Deer Run Village neighborhood were being completed during our visit and are now ready to tour.

We named Currahee Club our 2014 Bliss Award winner for Best Golf Community of the Year. This is hardly a plain vanilla golf course. It can be intimidating and humbling but my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. He quickly learned to use the slopes to his advantage. The golf path weaved up and down like a roller coaster through the tall evergreens and Magnolia trees. We enjoyed the sweet melodies from the birdlife as we navigated around the course. While I watched him play, I found each hole intriguing enough to nickname them and give you an idea of what to expect from this award winning mountain golf course:

Hole 1 - The Shredder (stunning mountaintop tee down to a valley elevated green)

Hole 2 - Reflections (par 3 over the lake)

Hole 3 - Mogul Madness (dog leg right up to an elevated green guarded by bumpy fairways and intimidating bunkers)

Hole 4 - The Currahee Shelf (par 3 over caverns and valleys surrounded by unforgiving slopes leading to an elevatedgreen)

Hole 5 - Masterful Deception (huge elevation differential from the tee box to the green. The distance is deceiving. If you don’t play it correctly, the ball will keep coming back to you)

Hole 6 - Draw Left is Right (a left drive through the trees will avoid the water hazards)

Hole 7 - Lucky 7 (dog leg right looks easy until you discover the water hazard ahead)

Hole 8 - Walk in the Park - (finally - a wide fairway leading to an elevated green)

Hole 9 - Cliff Driver (pray hard before you drive - you can’t see the pin from the tee box)

Hole 10 - The Big Wow! (Signature Currahee Club - has it all: lake, mountain, train trestle and feels like you are hitting into heaven all in one)

Hole 11 - Duck Duck Goose - (narrow fairway, bumpy slopes, birdlife sightings common on the pond, don’t overshoot the green)

Hole 12 - Fringe Benefits - (elevated tee over the valley to a collapsing green - the fringe is your friend here)

Hole 13 - Gentle Giant - (wide fairway leading to elevated green touching the clouds. If you land in the bunker, you might need an elevator to help bring you back up to the green)

Hole 14 - The Horseshoe (a straight shot will get you there to avoid the golf ball gobbler cavern)

Hole 15 - Hide & Seek (another hole where you have no idea where the pin placement is on the green. Yes, you can read the scorecard, but that takes the fun out of it!)

Hole 16 - The Boomerang Green (hit it wrong and your ball will roll right back to you)

Hole 17 - Drive for Show (a Signature Currahee Club hole over granite faced quarry)

Hole 18 - The Approach (a long finish leading up to the grandiose Currahee Clubhouse)

What’s new at the Currahee Club? They shrunk the course! Actually, they added a new par 60 Hartwell Course keeping fun in the game. Strategically placed tee boxes make the golf course less intimidating and easier. Membership at Currahee Club included access to ClubBenefits. Members enjoy access to hundreds of country clubs and private dining clubs around the world.

If golf’s not your thing, don’t worry. There are plenty of social clubs and activities to enjoy with your family and friends. For example, in June members enjoyed a TSO Patriotic Pops Concert on the lawn, Currahee’s Farmers Market & Summer Celebration, a Cooking Demonstration by Rebecca Lang and a Ladies Lunch and Learn. Get to know Currahee Club through their fascinating Facebook Page and find out what’s coming next at this gated Georgia mountain community.
