The generation that paved its own way is at it again. They’re dusting off old dreams they put on the backburner and heading off to school to explore new careers, hobbies, interests and other lifelong learning opportunities.

Lifelong learning is part of the culture for those living in Wilmington NC retirement communities. And at the center of this movement is the University of North Carolina Wilmington. It is no surprise Wilmington NC real estate is a desired community among retirees and those looking to for a second home.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNCW is where those 50 and older can nourish their minds and peak their curiosity by enrolling in classes and workshops.  The thirst for knowledge among boomers has reportedly helped in the 20% jump among college students ages 40-56 over the past decade.

On Saturday, October 29, the 15th annual College Day program will allow those hungry for knowledge to check out a sampling of the curriculum at UNCW. Religion, politics and the arts are just a few of the workshops listed for College Day, that will give potential students an idea of the vast curriculum offered throughout the year. Participants will be able to delve into in-depth discussions on timely topics such as Practicing Democracy in Early America, one of the workshops offered this year. It’ll be interesting to see how that topic relates to the current Presidential Election.

Lifelong learning is the passion of Bernard and Barbro Osher. The Oshers are among the country’s top supporters of higher education. They are credited with founding more than 110 educational institutes in 50 states, including UNCW’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Thanks to their generosity, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute has been awarded $2 million in endowments from the Bernard Osher Foundation. Lifelong learning opportunities such as those offered at UNCW make Wilmington NC real estate a sought after venue for those 50 and older. While its commitment to continuous education is encouraging, there’s a lot more that makes this port city a top attraction among tourists and residents looking to call one of Wilmington NC retirement communities home.

Located along the Cape Fear River, Wilmington’s historic downtown draws visitors to the area year-round. USA Today named its riverfront “Best American Riverfront” in 2014. Not far from the downtown district are some of the most beautiful beach communities within a quick walk or drive.

Wrightsville Beach is among those popular beach communities. Miles of sandy beaches may be the reason why this is considered North Carolina’s most accessible beach. The social scene and various outdoor activities, which include kayaking, surfing and fishing keeps residents preoccupied throughout the year. And best of all, Wrightsville Beach is located just north of downtown.

The beauty of Wilmington NC retirement communities is its close proximity among the neighborhoods. Just 5-minutes from Wrightsville Beach is one of the top places to live in North Carolina, Parkside at Mayfaire. This small town walkable neighborhood is full of southern charm. Start the morning off sipping a cup of coffee, while relaxing on a bench and people watching from the town center and before you know it the day has turned into night and it’s time to hit the social scene.

The Country Club of Landfall is one of the area’s finest golfing communities and is a long four iron away. Golfers can choose to play from one of two signature courses that are fused throughout the estate. Non-golfers have options too. There’s the beach, shopping, restaurants and nearby historic Wilmington to pass the day away.
