Greenville Gainesville Greenways

Baby Boomers we work with who are searching for where to retire know exactly what they want. Although they may not be certain as to whether to buy in a gated community or traditional neighborhood, their Top 10 Checklist always includes living close to a safe exciting city with excellent medical care, entertaining culture and modern conveniences. We find most Boomers want to live less than 30 minutes from a best city.

To us, a best city to live offers all of these things and more. For example, the City of Nashville has gone the extra mile by building Greenways connecting Nashville neighborhoods to the heart of downtown. These Greenways provide beautiful corridors away from busy streets, pathways that are safe to walk and bike. Nashville Greenways connect to children’s playgrounds, city parks and scenic outlooks. Cities who have Greenways promote wellness and add value to the community as a whole.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail is Greenville South Carolina’s 9.5 mile Greenway system. The trail system connects Travelers Rest with downtown Greenville. Over 100 miles of bike trails are planned south of The Reserve at Lake Keowee, one of the best South Carolina lake communities. The Greenville Hospital System launched the project to promote healthier lifestyles which include regular exercise. City parks along the trail include Gateway Park, Verner Springs Park, Falls Park and Cleveland Park. The Swamp Rabbit Trail passes through the heart of Furman University leading to Greenville Tech on the southern end of town. More than 1,000 people per day use the Greenway system in Greenville SC. It would make sense that bicycle rentals become available along the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

For example, Broward County Florida recently launched a bicycle sharing rental system. The program along the Fort Lauderdale beach corridor makes it easy for folks to rent a bike at point a, returning it to point b anywhere along the path system. Club members can purchase a 7 day pass or annual membership. This eliminates the hassle of loading our bike into our car or the need to live in close proximity to a Greenway.

In April 2012, Gainesville Georgia opened Phase 1 of the Midtown Greenway system. Gainesville Georgia is located one hour north of Atlanta and borders Lake Sidney Lanier, Georgia’s best lake. When complete, the one mile Midtown Greenway will stretch over three miles and foster the development of a 15-mile trail loop by connecting a planned Hall County trail running from Gainesville State College and Chicopee Woods north to the city's existing Rock Creek Greenway, which runs through a series of parks from downtown to Longwood Cove on Lake Lanier. Future plans include more trails and will connect with Gainesville’s pedestrian bridge. Trick or Treat on the Trail and 5k events have already taken place this year on the Midtown Greenway system overlooking one of Georgia's best lakes, just south of Big Canoe, the best mountain communities in Georgia.

If you enjoy the outdoors and plan to keep wellness a priority, we suggest you consider these three best cities to live during your search for where to retire, the cities of Nashville, Greenville and Gainesville.
