Savannah Charm - Southern Best Places to Retire

Savannah Neighborhoods Best Places To Retire
Published on April 30, 2013

Most folks we talk with who are planning to relocate to the south aren’t looking to move into a big touristy city. But there’s something to be said about living close to one. Americans love to travel to historic cities with fun things to do, world class dining, and excellent live entertainment. When we think of the southeast, Savannah quickly comes to mind as a southern favorite and best place to retire.

During our recent trip researching Savannah neighborhoods, we had the chance to see this great city from the water on the Roseway, a tall ship built in 1925. She’s a restored schooner from Massachusetts and offers tours of the Savannah River during the month of April while she’s docked in Savannah. The city of Savannah was founded in 1751. From the water, downtown Savannah reminds us of Thames River in England with colonial buildings and cobblestone streets closely hugging the river. Gothic cathedrals and new chic hotels peek over the shoulders of the riverfront. The sights, the smells and the church bells echoing through the city are invigorating.

We could have spent days exploring the downtown streets lined with trendy clothiers, tasting five star restaurants and treasure hunting in one of a kind stores. If you haven’t yet visited Savannah, we suggest taking a horse-drawn carriage ride to explore the famous park-like squares with huge fountains and to learn your way around this culturally infused city. There are so many fun things to do in Savannah. People are friendly in what’s becoming a best place to retire. Ask us for a free Savannah Relocation Package to learn more.

When we think of living in Savannah, it’s good to know that downtown is easy to get in and out of via Interstate 16. Savannah neighborhoods we found of most interest include Southbridge, The Landings and The Ford Plantation. Southbridge is located 8 miles from the riverfront where as the others are twice the distance on less traveled roads. All three offer traditional golf country club living and are located outside of the city limits saving folks money on real estate taxes. What Savannah’s not - a beach town. Although its located along the coast, Tybee Island is the closest beach and is approximately 25 miles to the northeast.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation's home base is in Savannah. Gulfstream designs, develops, manufactures, markets, and services business-jet aircraft. Savannah is the 2nd largest port in the United States. Cargo ships stacked sky high with containers navigate their way through the Savannah River passing by the riverfront. Savannah has a military presence with Hunter Amy Field and Fort Stewart serving the area. New Savannah neighborhoods are popping up all around Richmond Hill and in Pooler to accommodate younger families raising children. Add to the mixture top notch medical care through the St. Josephs/Candler health care system and you’ve got everything you’d expect of a great city.

Savannah has become a best art town and is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design nicknamed SCAD. Its college campus now consists of 67 buildings throughout the grid-and-park system of downtown Savannah. Many buildings are located on the famous 21 squares of the old town, which are anchored by monuments and majestic live oak trees. This best college town attracts creative people of all ages. SCAD operates world class art galleries around the globe.  Savannah’s top festivals include the Savannah Music Festival and the country’s 2nd largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, both held in March. The Savannah Seafood Festival in May and Fourth of July on the Riverfront are festivals not to be missed.
